The Chettiar: traditional recyclists of George Town, Penang

Updated: Oct 4, 2023

"Chettiar" is a familiar term in Malaysia. It refers to a business class who were originally from Tamil Nadu, India. In George Town, Penang, the Chettiar traditionally own recycling businesses. I had the privilege of visiting a few Chettiar houses in 2012.
